Last Rays, Canal Rocks – Last of the Canal Rocks Images for now.

This is the last of the images in the series and was taken the same night the previous two were. Looking back from Canal Rocks towards Wyadup Rocks as a larger swell set came through giving the misted effect on the rocks due to the long exposure.

This was a 7 image stitch carefully timed to avoid any issues with stitching in photoshop. As those who shoot moving water and stitch will know how frustrating it can be to have a set of perfectly good images not line up due to differing wave movements. Given my lack of photoshop skills, if it doesn’t do it the first time automatically, then it gets trashed or put aside until one day I learn about masks and blending manually…

Not sure why, but the is my favourite panoramic of the series. Just can’t put my finger on why?

Red Light Panoramic, Canal Rocks

This is a panoramic version of the Red Burst square format.  Taken within minutes of this image.

It is very apparent in this image just how vivid red the sunset was to the right of the frame. In fact some people sitting on the rocks behind me gave the sunset a big cheer and clap when the red colour suddenly burst out.

This one is a combination of 6 images stitched together and then cropped in a 5:2 panoramic ratio to maximise the scene.

Red Burst, Canal Rocks. How the light can change…

Taken from the same spot as the previous image on the same night.

This is a good example of how the light can change over a short period of time.

In this case the red in the sunset was so intense I actually desaturated it slightly to stop it looking unreal. Hence the name Red Burst.

Once again a stitched composition of 3 long exposure images cropped to a square format.

Twilight Fade – Moody Blues…. Canal Rocks, Smiths Beach WA

On yet another day, from a similar vantage point, long after the sun had retreated below the horizon and the light was fading fast, I captured this image at Canal Rocks as the waves washed through the gap between the rocks.

A composition of 3 images and cropped to a square format, it was nearly put in the recycle bin due to not having enough colour or being a bit dark for a black and white rendition. But for some reason it appealed to me for its dark eery soulful moody feel or maybe it was just because I received numerous sand fly bites and I felt that I needed something to show for waiting until darkness…

I added some post process vignetting to help draw the viewer into the image and give the feeling of fading light.

Another day at Canal Rocks, another perspective in two ways.

Another day over the Easter break, and another perspective.

This multi image stitch is looking South from Canal Rocks towards Wyadup Rocks.

The colours in the sky that night were more pastel peachy glow, rather than an intense vivid red or orange. Just a different face of an amazing bit of coastline.

Being subtle in colour along with some good texture in the rocks, I thought that a desaturation into Black and White would also work in this case. I just couldn’t help myself….

Fading Light, Square format, Canal Rocks near Smiths Beach

This is square format shot on the same night as the previous wide panoramic at Canal Rocks, near Smiths Beach.

The is a multiple stitched image taken after the sun had gone below the horizon and that magical colour burst occurs for a minute or too, before rapidly fading as night falls.

A different perspective and an eery feel.

Wide Panoramic of Canal Rocks near Smiths Beach

This is a wide panoramic shot at sunset at Canal Rocks, near Smiths Beach.

This is approximately 9 images stitched together and is nearly a 180 degree view.

This is a wild and amazing place. Several times I had to watch larger swells due to the prospect of being washed off the rocks.

It’s a great place to throw in a line too, but on this day the conditions weren’t too kind.

Easter Black and White Captures, Canal Rocks near Smiths Beach

It’s amazing how time just files on by.

I’ve finally manged to download some images I took at Canal Rocks whilst taking a short break over Easter with the family.

This first lot are black and white examples shot over a few days. One is a panoramic and the other two are square format which for some reason this format is growing on me.

I was lucky enough to score the place with some decent cloud cover and good swell rolling through which adds to the drama.

Hope you like them. I’ll post some colour images taken soon.

Another helicopter capture, this time high in the clouds during the Helifishing trip.

No matter how many times I go in a helicopter, I just can’t wipe the smile off my face!

Threatening Storm – Mary River Mouth – Shady Camp – Northern Territory

Whilst at the mouth of the Mary River, approximately a 40km run downstream from Shady Camp Billabong in the Northern Territory a large wet season Thunderstorm threatened to end the day’s fishing for Barramundi.

Whilst the wind got up a bit and we had some light rain, we were lucky in that it passed on by.

You can see a number of boats trolling the mouth and out to sea for Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon. Pretty slow day for fishing, but some great scenery.

Cheers
